In the late 1990’s Shingleback was proud to be a founding partner of an innovative project that brought reclaimed water to McLaren Vale (the Willunga Basin Water Company). This has helped protect the valuable underground water resources and greatly reduced the use of mains potable water on vineyards in the district, while allowing measured industry growth to continue. As proud South Australians we are only too aware of the plight of the Murray River and our region is a shining example of what can be done.
Precise computerised irrigation management throughout the vineyard optimises use of this valuable resource.
Shingleback has been member of the McLaren Vale Sustainable Winegrowing programme since its inception. This initiative that began in McLaren Vale to maximise growers & regional overall sustainability and to minimise environmental impacts has now been embraced Australia-wide.
Partners & Ongoing Projects
The Shingleback team have a strong working relationship with both Government (the Department of Environment & Water & Department of Environment & Natural Resources) and local organisations ( as Winery Partner of the McLaren Vale Biodiversity Project).
Together they have developed an ongoing sustainability and biodiversity plan for the Davey Estate Vineyard that includes:
• Revegetation and weed control. Aim – to promote biodiversity of natural vegetation within a commercial agricultural enterprise (vineyard). This will help create a habitat for beneficial insects to keep economic pests below the spray threshold. 4Ha of insect-attractive native plantings are being undertaken in early 2019.
• Installation of kangaroo & rabbit-proof fencing.
• Microbat project. Working with the Department of Environment & Water, anabat monitors & bat boxes have been installed on the periphery of the vineyard. Microbats, which weigh as little as 3 – 150g, can eat half their body weight in insects overnight, hoping to reduce the numbers of damaging insects within the vineyard. Now in the early stages of the project, Shingleback is one of 12 McLaren Vale wineries participating in the project that hopes to identify which microbats are present and what they eat.
• Encourage predatory birds. Aiming to encourage hawks & falcons to the area with the installation of predatory perches.
• Ladybirds. Scale can be a problem within the vineyard. In late January 2019, rather than using sprays, 2000 ladybirds were released in 2Ha of the Davey Estate that had been showing increased scale populations. The ladybirds love feasting on a juicy scale insect!
