Kitchen Garden

Mataro 2016

Tasting Note

Behind the historic farm house, now home to Shingleback’s Tasting Room, in what used to be the old kitchen garden a small Mataro (Mourvédre) vineyard stands.
Today the restaurant kitchen produces fine local fare, enhancing our wines and welcoming visitors to “the Vale”.

Deep red. Slightly rustic earth and truffle notes accentuate the blackberry core of the aroma. On the palate, gamey smoked meats mingle with the dark berry flavours. Moreish chewy and savoury tannins complete this medium to full bodied Mataro.

Ferrous red with a bit if grunt. Dry tannin gives it a gravity, a presence. It tastes of earth, gunmetal, leather and blackberry, cocoa-like notes hanging around about. This takes a while to unfurl; it benefits from a quick double-decant. Then again, its taut dryness is part of its appeal. Not a big wine but a very good one.

Campbell Mattinson,, April 2017

Fresh on the nose a mix of blueberry and blackcurrant young vibrant across the palate it skips and bounces around in youthful vigour, it needs to settle and should do so by the year end (tasted May 2016) 93 points and worth its $25

Tony Keys, Key Report , June 2017

Deep, concentrated red/purple colour. The aroma is fresh and spicy, clean and bright, with some black pepper. It’s rich, concentrated, highly structured and yet supple, with masses of supple, ripe tannins. Very good. 90, June 2017

Aged in older French oak puncheons and hogshead or 10 months, the purity of mataro shines through wth a display of vibrant fruit flavours, all red and bue berried. It's medium-bodied with detailed tannins and a neat savoury edge on the finish.
